Odd i saw this cover painting with same suits (Galaxy magazine 1977) http://66.media.tumblr.com/1ed952be2f081b0f4c1b69add2ca819d/tumblr_nnksv3SrQg1sndzdgo1_1280.jpg and were the suits used in a Movie ?
Nice find. Looks to me like the artist took his inspiration from what he assumed was a long forgotten magazine advert... little knowing that people like us and the internet would out him several decades later!
As to the origin of the suits; I'm guessing they were made for the advert. They are familiar in style to the 50's early 60's design but I've yet to discover an earlier appearance. I also think Avon was a big enough company to have had them made for the advert.
